College Football Transactions:
Head Coaches: Gettysburg named defensive coordinator John
Campo as interim head coach to take over for Barry Streeter, head coach
for the past 26 years, who took a leave of absence for the season...
Jay Thomas was promoted to head coach at Nicholls State. He had
been assistant head coach and defensive coordinator.
LSU
Equipment to Travel in Style
When the LSU football
team hits the road for a game, the squad travels in style,
normally chartering jets and getting police escorts to
and from the stadium. Now, thanks to LSU’s fund-raising
arm – the Tiger Athletic Foundation – the
Tigers’ football equipment will get first-class
treatment as well. A custom-designed Peterbilt tractor-trailer
will transport the teams’ equipment to each road
game.
Doubling as an LSU billboard on wheels, the purple and gold tractor-trailer
is designed with features such as a Bengal tiger, an LSU football helmet and
a listing of the school’s national championships and Southeastern Conference
titles. The truck will be used for all away games, transporting approximately
40,000 pounds of equipment on each trip.
The most intimidating feature on the trailer is a set of Tiger-eyes, which
occupy nearly the entire right side of the trailer. Imagine seeing that sight
on a Southern highway in the middle of the night.
Moms
Coaching Football?
The NFL is bringing
a women’s touch to coaching... a group of moms
in New Orleans is blazing a trail to a new level of parental
involvement: becoming youth football coaches. In conjunction
with the NFL, the New Orleans Saints have trained 30
moms from New Orleans Parish to coach (and play) football.
The moms have completed classroom sessions and on-the-field
instruction to learn the basics of football and how to
teach the sport.
Mothers in Charge of the Playbook was the idea of Scott Lancaster, the NFL’s
Senior Director of Youth Football Programs. He believes that by converting
soccer moms into football moms, these women will teach the game in a way that
will foster a lasting love, appreciation, and the right values for the sport.
The ultimate goal is to tap into this resource and increase the number of female
football coaches nationwide. |
Football Assistants - Quincy announced Camron Olson as offensive
coordinator. Olson has been a graduate assistant at Idaho State
since 2002... Charleston Southern tabbed Chuck Kelly as offensive
coordinator and offensive line coach... Muskingum added Philip
Witker as football defense secondary coach and head wrestling coach,
Matt Andreas as quarterbacks coach, Clint Fox as offensive line
coach and James Washington as wide receivers coach... Nick
Towns was hired as an assistant coach at Tusculum. Towns was an assistant
at West Virginia Tech last season... Edinboro named Mike
Hodgson as quarterbacks coach... Larry
Bowe and Joe Fowler were selected
as assistant coaches at Franklin & Marshall... Fred
von Appen retired as an assistant coach at Montana... Tri-State named Dan
Hernandez as assistant football coach and assistant sports information
director. For the past two years, Hernandez has served as a student
football coach at MacMurray... Missouri Western State added Todd
Throckmorton as offensive line coach. Throckmorton has been head
coach at Fort Lewis for the past four seasons and formerly was
an assistant at Missouri Western State from 1990 to 1996.
Kutztown named Al Holcomb as defensive coordinator and defensive
backs coach.... Tim Hauck was hired as safeties coach at Montana.
Hauck played in the NFL for 13 years. Montana also announced that
defensive coordinator Jeff Hammerschmidt will coach cornerbacks
after overseeing the safeties last season. Ty Gregorek will move
to linebackers coach and Kraig Paulson will move to defensive ends
coach. Paulson has also been elevated to assistant head coach....Upper
Iowa appointed Greg Davis as offensive line coach and Tom
Shea as defensive coordinator. The school also elevated Chris
Hutchings to offensive coordinator and Jeff
Engel to assistant head coach...
Kevin Titus was chosen as an assistant at Centre.
Westminster (Missouri) promoted Kevin O’Neal to full-time
assistant coach... Assumption added Peter Leonard as defensive
coordinator and linebackers coach, John Bussey as recruiting coordinator,
Todd Roberts as special teams coordinator and wide outs coach,
Ron Hawn as defensive line coach and video coordinator, Ryan
Mattison as secondary coach, Dominique
Jacques as offensive coordinator
and quarterbacks coach, Craig Kopka as running backs coach and
Bill O’Neill as secondary coach... Millsaps announced Fred
McNair as quarterbacks coach.... Luke Harris was named offensive
line coach at Delaware State...Washington and Lee tabbed T.J.
