The athletes from the following institutions may not been the biggest, fastest or the strongest coming out of high school. They may have not even been the best "pure athletes" on the nation's football fields last fall. But certainly, their teams achieved the level of success in 1997 for which every program strives - national championships. For the information of your staff and players who aspire to play at the nation's colleges and universities, we are happy to present true empirical highs, lows and averages from the 1997 National Champions. Remember, players find a place to play, and there can never be a definitive measure for desire, determination or heart.

AFM would like to thank the following coachs and staffs for participating in this year's study: Mike Arthur of Nebraska, Mike Cochran of Youngstown State, Marty English of Northern Colorado, Erik Raeburn of Mount Union and Don Akers of Findlay. Mike Gittleson of Michigan said that as a rule, none of Michigan's programs give out personal emperical data-otherwise the Wolverines would have been more than happy to participate in the study.
