One of the least things known about American Football Monthly is a tradition that started when the magazine moved to South Florida in the summer of 1997. Every year South Florida welcomes hundreds of college coaches vying for the most talented athletes the area has to offer and for the last six years AFM has played host to many of these coaches traveling to our back yard.

Over the years we have had lunch and dinner with staff members from programs at all levels – college, high school and the pros. We have heard some of the most entertaining stories of the coaching profession’s past and present. However, most often we take advantage of these meetings by asking many questions about the football industry and what new topics we need to cover in the magazine.

This past week during the May recruiting period, the tradition continued when we had lunch with a young assistant coach from a college program. After discussing the issues facing young coaches and searching for future article ideas, the talk turned to the young coach’s career goals. Now, we’ve asked hundreds, if not thousands, of coaches throughout the years about their career goals – the majority respond with solid plans of action that will potentially lead them to the level and/or positions that they desire.

However, what separated the young coach from other assistant coaches was quite simple – the details. In a casual conversation it was apparent that he had put much energy, thought, research and planning in developing his career plan of action – that included everything from continuing to develop his X’s & O’s strategies to understanding the thought process and responsibilities of today’s head coaches and everything in between. Fortunately, he has a great head coach that understands and accepts his goals and works with him by including him in meetings and decisions that he would otherwise not be involved.

Due to the development of a detailed career plan of action and his commitment to work his plan, there is no doubt in my mind that this coach will one day get his dream job – because his plan does not state otherwise.

As you develop your plan of action – whether for your career or program – we invite you to continue to use American Football Monthly as a tool in achieving your goals. With this issue and every issue, our goal is to provide you with in-depth, exclusive coaching information in all areas of the profession.

As always, if there is ever anything that we can do to assist you, please do not hesitate to contact us at 561-355-5068. Thank you.

P.S. If you’re ever in South Florida, please give us a call – we’ll have lunch and talk football.

Respectfully,

Travis H. Davis
