On behalf of Coach Watson Brown and our defensive coaches Rick Christophel (DL), Shawn Raney (DB) and George Pugh (DB) we are privileged to share with you some of our defensive philosophy. In this article we will show some of our ideas in our zone blitz package. Because offensives are so complex, there are advantages to blitzing with a two or three deep shell. Keeping the QB guessing as to what coverage is being played is always an advantage for the defense. Being able to run two different coverages behind the same blitz with the same pre-snap look will make the read tougher for an offense.

Our Okie package consists of three DL, three LB’s and five DB’s. Our alignment is to the field and as follows: The SE always aligns to the field with the WE into the boundary. The nose guard is head up the center. The nickel and mike align to the field while the backer and will align into the boundary.

Here is the same blitz out of the same look but with a different coverage (See Diagrams 1-6).

*The Defensive Line and two blitzers are the same every time.

WE = Long Stick (penetrating to the A gap unless the guard blocks hard away)

NG = Slant to the strong A penetrating up the field

SE = Contain rush

W = Blitz the B gap under all blocks = Contain blitzer

M = Hash Dropper Wk

N = Ram 2-1 (Field)

C’s = Flat Players

S/FS = 1/2 Players

M = Ram 2-1 Wk

N = Ram 2-1 Strong

C’s = Flat Players

FS/SS 1/2 Players

M = Middle player off #3

FS/N = Seam Players

C’s = 1/3 Players

SS = 1/3 Player

M = Middle Player off #3

FS/N = Seam Players

C’s = Outside 1/3’s

SS = Middle 1/3

M = Ram #3

N = Ram 2-1

C’s = Flat Players

FS/SS = 1/2 Players

M = Middle Player off #3

N/FS = Seam Players

C’s = Outside 1/3’s

SS = Middle 1/3

• Ram Technique is jumping the first inside route 2-1. If no underneath route then run with vertical of #2.

• Seam Player is a curl player on #2, flat jumper or wheel runner.

• Middle player plays strong hook off #3 and jumps any short crosser (the new #3).

Here are the drills we do for a ram technique. Always stand on the back hip of #2 (Diagrams 7-10).
