‘Covering a Great Receiver’, ‘Line Techniques in the 3-5-3 Defense’, and Henderson State’s ‘Scorched Earth Offense’ are three articles that you will see in this issue of AFM. All three are a result of AFM subscriber research; that is, the responses to detailed questions about what are readers want to read about and learn more from. Each quarter our marketing department will issue a detailed survey to subscribers in an effort to determine what specific kinds of articles and clinics our readers want.

The three features listed in the first paragraph are a direct result of our May survey. We’ve learned that in all kinds of articles – features, drills, and clinics – our subscribers want detailed, advanced information whether it be an aspect of offense, defense, special teams, drills, or game-day strategy. In our upcoming November and December issues, here are some of the topics to be covered based, again, on subscriber research:

•  Howard Schnellenberger’s FAU Play-Action Passing Game

•  Strategies for a Dominant Rushing Defense

•  Point-counterpoint: the Jet Sweep vs. the 4-4 Defense

•  Defensive Line Stunts in Passing Situations

•  Inside the Option

•  Intricacies of the Spread Punt

•  Maximizing Kickoff Return Coverage

Additionally, we plan to continue position specific drills and techniques for improving speed in both our ‘Drills Report’ and ‘Speed Report.’ The ‘Strength Report’ will also continue in the fourth quarter with position specific training regimens. This month it focuses on strength training for linebackers. In the next few months you will also see more advanced clinics from such colleges as: LSU, Oklahoma State, Vanderbilt and Northern Illinois.

The fourth part of each issue – in addition to specific features, clinics, and reports – is the interactive portion. In addition to this month’s issue, both ‘The Situation’ and ‘AFM Subscribers Ask…’ will continue in November and December. For both sections of AFM, we ask our readers to respond to either a game-specific situation or asking a coach a question to be answered. While USC’s Pete Carroll is featured in this month’s issue, our next two editions will feature Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer and Colorado’s Dan Hawkins. You can learn more by going to our web site:  www.AmericanFootballMonthly.com.

We hope you enjoy this issue and welcome your suggestions and comments.

                        Respectfully,
                        Rex Lardner
