Advanced Tackling Circuit Drillsby: Rob EggerlingAssistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator, St. Anselm College © More from this issue With the ever increasing use of spread offenses at all levels, and the emphasis of getting offensive players in space to make plays, proper tackling has never been more important. Correct tackling skills and mechanics will keep players safe and allow them to make a play when in position. These are very important factors when we introduce and talk about tackling to our student-athletes. The number of missed tackles over a course of a game should not reach the double digit mark. If and when it does, the outcome of the game usually is not in your favor. As a season unfolds, a lot of fundamentals are put on the back burner, which is why we make it a priority to use at least three different tackling drills during each week. Here are some detailed tackling circuit drills: About the Author: Rob Eggerling recently completed his fourth season as Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at St. Anselm. He previously was the Defensive Coordinator at Hartwick College. Eggerling also coached at both the University of New Hampshire and St. Lawrence University. A four-year letterman at Southern Connecticut State, he received his bachelor’s degree there and a master’s from St. Lawrence. |
