  • Hello, I live in the Los Angeles area am looking for an opportunity to get into coaching. I played football at the high school level, but not in college. I have owned a video production and post production business for the past 13 years in Hollywoood. I am hoping there is a coach in high school or a smaller college that would be interested in giving me experience on a coaching staff at any level, in exchange for me providing video and multimedia services for the team. I am very good at web, mobile, dvd video, etc. I think this is a good approach for me to enter the coaching world. I would need little or no pay (just for materials, gas, etc), but would love the opportunity to be involved and have an entry level position. Any thoughts, contacts, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Hey Jason, I`m the one who told you about contacting Pete Gonzalez at St. Paul. Well Pete is no longer there, but will be moving to Montebello H.S. soon for the 2009 season. Maybe you can offer your services to Pete in exchange for being apart of the coaching staff. I sent you a personal email please get a hold of me ASAP to see if we can work something out. Keep in mind this school has no video equipment at this time, we would like to change that.

  • Hello coaches. I started my coaching career this year and it has been the greatest decision of my life. I am currently coaching at the jr. high level and have plans to move in to high school and eventually college. Does anyone have any advice on moving into the college coaching ranks. I understand that taking a GA spot is probably what I will have to do but I'm not sure how to get that ball rolling. Any advice would greatly be appreciated.

  • What type of question's can you expect when intervewing for an OC position.
Reply - Date: 2008-12-29 by: EmailDave
  • The questions will obviously vary based on who is asking them. I was just involved interviewing the hiring of a new coach to our staff. One thing that we focused on was what type of offense you are looking at running and why? A common response is usually whatever best suits the talent you are given. That is true, but we are really looking at what your offensive philosophy is. Defend your philosophy and game plan. Keep in mind that there will always be a defense out there to stop it, and understand that whoever holds the pen last will always win. Know your X's and O's and you'll be fine. Good luck!

  • BIRMINGHAM WILDIFRE AAA MINOR LEAGUE FOOTBALL NORTH AMERICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE BHAMWILDFIRE.COM The Birmingham Wildfire is a AAA Minor League Football team based in Birmingham, Alabama. The Wildfire is a member of the North American Football League (NAFL); The NAFL is the world's largest Minor League with over 120 teams in the US and Canada. We are seeking a Head Football Coach for the 2009 Minor League Football Season which is a Summer/Fall based schedule. Coaching duties with a Minor League team do not conflict with normal High School Varsity Coaching Duties. I can say this from personal. I am the Owner of the Wildfire and currently have an Interim Head Coach for the current season. Minor League teams have a limited mandatory practice schedule which enables coaches with a tight schedule or retired coaches the ability to continue in the sport they love without the time a Varsity High School or college program would require. We are only able to offer a small stipend currently, but are continually working to improve our budget. We have additional assistant positions available. Feel free to visit our website at Bhamwildfire.com and contact me by email owner@bhamwildfire.com, looking forward to hearing from you all.

  • Can some one send my drills or sites that discusses stopping the trap play for def. linemen. We play a shade nose and a 3 technique. Am having a toughtime getting the 3 technique to squeeze the trap and not get upfield. Any help anyone?
Reply - Date: 2008-09-23 by: Emailscott nichols
  • Hopefully this will help. your 3 tech should be squeezing the guard and not allowing him to get to level 2 linebacker. if the guards eyes to inside near center. if the guard does block down or try to go to level 2 tell your 3 tech to keep eyes inside on centers but. Once he see's the backside guard / tackle appear he should "Wrong arm the trap". Using his outside arm rip across pulling G or T face to his inside hip. thus putting his helmet and body in the hole making the back bounce out of the trap hole. sn

  • Can anybody advise me on the proper disciplinary proceedures for a kid who disobeys coaches and is disrespectful to teammates? Oh, by the way, the kid is mine too. (coaching JAAF, 7-8 year olds).
Reply - Date: 2009-02-04 by: EmailP. Meyer
  • Make the player run or sit out esp. if he is your son. Also speak with him outside of practice and tell him what you expect before practice starts. Reward good behavior and run or sit him out for negative behavior - make sure you explain what you expect and then follow through without emotion (as much as possible) I coach my son and am lucky that I have not had many problems! Good Luck and enjoy your time together!

  • 3-5-3 I am a D-line coach but have taken over the defense as coordinator. I am a little fuzzy on the reads for the outside backers and DB"s in cover 2 and 3. For example in twins or trips does the corner read #1 or #2 receiver in cover three? This is middle school football.
Reply - Date: 2008-09-03 by: EmailCoach Trout
  • Corner reads in (2): Get a jam on #1 with inside leverage so to take away the slant, and disrupt a vertical routes timing. this will take the initial stress off of the saftey who must read the mesh between #1 and #2 and be over top of any verts. In trips, if both (1 & 2 ) go vert than it is vital that the (olb) plays a "wall" technique on #2 all the way to the goal line. Back to the Corner: Once a jam is made he must shift his eyes directly to #2 and then #3 (trips) for any out breaking routes. If smash shows, the corner must drop to a depth of about 12 yards on the nubers so to take away the corner route and then break up on the short stuff in front of him. He must not get nosey and play the hitch/out to quick or there will be a hole behind him, which will definitely put the safety in compromizing position.

  • I recently saw an advertisement for a sleeve (attached to a strap) that fits over the football. The running back runs with the ball and a coach or player follows behind, jerks on the strap and attempts to cause a fumble. Unfortunately I cannot remember the name or manufacturer of this training equipment. Any help you can supply would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi I have just gotten out of high school and want to start coaching high school and do college, I have experience working in a college atmosphere already by being a volunteer coach even though I have no Playing experience, I am very knowledgeable about the game of football, I am about to start college so should I try for a high school job or wait until I get my degree in four years?

  • Going to college full time is a full time job. You might want to seek out a local high school program and see if you can scout for them on weekends. Good Luck!

  • I am looking for some advice. I have been in coaching high school vasity football in Massachusetts for the last 4 years. Also, I have been working to complete undergraduate degree and i will be finished in Dec '08. After i complete my degree I really want to move into coaching in a college. What would be the best way to approach this? Should I become a Graduate Assistant? or should I just apply for a assistant coach position at a d3 or d2 college?
Reply - Date: 2008-02-01 by: EmailTony
  • Coach, the question is what can you afford to do? If you become a GA, you will gain valuable experience and contacts - how ever you will be broke. If you go D-3 you will enjoy the coaching life but have to get a "REAL" job and work extremely hard to move up. In the end coaching is more about WHO you know, not WHAT you know. D-1 coaches take care of their own first before they look outside. Finally, a master's degree will allow you to be more valuable in the end. So can you afford to be broke for the next few years. In the end, will there be a D-1 job for you or will you end up as a JC assisant coach makeing $3000 per season?

  • Our football program has existed about 6 years and has experienced little success. We are trying to develop a "football culture" and get boys involved. We have the athletes walking the halls, the financial support, good staff.....we just need the numbers to build this program. Any advice?
    Reply - Date: 2008-01-18 by: EmailCoach B
  • Hello coach, I am no sure what type of offense your team runs. But at my high school we have incorporated the spread offense into our program. The spread is very easy to learn for lineman, and skill positions. The spread can put up major numbers on the scoreboard. Thusly, it will intice more students to come out to the team. When our coach staff first started 5 years ago here we had 49 students in our program. Next year, we are plan on having 110 students in our program. Our school is not big about 600 boys throughout the school. But the chance of scoring points makes those students that are on the fence want to join.

  • Coach, I once took over a program that was 0-42 in its first six seasons that had not scored an offensive touchdown in two years. Great kids and the toughest I have ever seen on a ball field. We got that team to 3-3 the first season. There is a huge problem in coaching today whereby we take any kid that wants to play. Bad grades, fine. Skips classes, fine. You have a golden opportunity and in my humble opinion, you have one chance to get on the right path. Set the bar high, make the work difficult. Inisist on good grades, community service, and self-discipline. Any coach can discipline a player, but I have seen precious few that can instill self-discipline. Send me an email and I will send you the team creed I developed to set the standard to be a part of my team. I promise you will take a beating from parents and even from fellow coaches for about six months and then it will all come together. Make your program one that is a privledge to participate in. Football is not a right of school kids. There is one caveat, if you are not willing to set the standard and insist that every coach does the same, then do not even bother. Kids will spot a fake effort every time. BTW, the team I turned around is back to 0-6 since I left. I do not say this to boast, I say it because a team culture can vanish in a single season. Write me back at my email address. I would love to talk to you.

  • I have picked up Jeff Walker's 40 Nickel D book and am quite impressed with how it teaches you to teach kids technique and such but the DLINE material is unreal. He mentions what each technique should do against all these types of blocks and i have no idea what he's talking about (he assumes i do). The blocks are: Check, Cut-Off, Double Team, Dropback Pass, Hinge Pass, Reach, Turnback Pass, Down, Base, Influence, Zone, Intside, Out, Trey and Veer...if i could understand these types of blocks better i will be able to undertsand what he's saying for the DL section. thanks in advance

We are going to have a young line and halfbacks, but a good qb and reciever core. I would like to learn from any playbooks that can be sent, as well as any advice you may have. • I'm a currently residing in Canada. I'm looking to for an opportunity as a coach overseas 1st and possibly North America. If anyone has any relevant info, would be much appreciated. I have extensive Player experience, Offensive coaching experience( Wide receiver and defensive back coaching expereice as well. I'm also a Strenght and speed conditioning coach. I also ran track and field at the Olympic level, 60m and 100m. I bring an-all-in-one structure, football toughness, mental toughness, tricks of the trade and Olympic level conditioning. And hopefully a system if needed. I'm more interested in a challenge and not an established championship team. Prefrrrably a team that's truly hungry to play in the big show and has a system that gears toward the success. I have helped 5 teams reach the playoffs for their 1st time as a player and a coach. The last one being Cinneplex Blue Devils (Div 1Austria) and Stockholm Mean Machines (Div 1 Sweden) previous I'm a hands-on type of coach, I like to demonstrate on the field 1st the techiques, with game speed so the players have a better understanding what's expected form them. My phiosophy is Technique, Technique and Techinique followed by commitment. Bio and CV available upon request. Cheers in advance

  • Hi coaches. I have had a growing interest in the 4-2-5 defense. I believe in the even front because 1) I feel it is easier for a DL to take on 1/2 of an offensive lineman rather than line head and have to depend on two-gapping or slanting and angling. 2) The idea of having to rely on a MLB that can run sideline to sideline is hard to find year in and year out. 3) You can run several different coverages without having to telegraph to the offense what coverage you are running by alignment. I know there is no perfect defense, but I believe that this is one that can give an edge to my defense thanks

  • hey, we've run it for the last 10 years at a small school in sw louisiana. we've tried to get away from it from time to time but we always go back. having smart tough players at the ss positions is the key in my opinion.

  • Coaches, I am having problems with the option and contain in the 3-5-3. any suggestions?? Thanks Chris
Reply - Date: 2008-09-11 by: EmailNeil
  • Tell your players that it takes eleven men for a defense to be effective. Many times we have eleven individuals running around ALL trying to make the tackle. Tell your kids to know thier role. To help with outside contain, I run "outside run" drills. I set up a half field with one MLB one OLB one saftey and a corner. I use TE or a slot rec, a rec, a TE, and the QB FB TB, and run options and sweeps at those players. During this you can really show your OLB's how to keep outside contain and funnel the runner back to pursuit. Too often the OLB screams in and wants to make the play. Sometimes he needs to just fight to stay outside and funnel the runner back to the MLB and the Saftey that is coming down hill on the fill. You can also show your MLB and safties how important thier role is in inside out filling and not overrunning the play. Of course different D's have different contain players on the option, we run a 3-4 with our sam in a 9 tech. So our OLB's have outside contain. Also, you need to establish who takes the qb and who takes the pitch man. This varies with the Defensive front and with the play call. Hope this helps.

Reply - Date: 2007-10-08 by: EmailDaniel Kennamore
  • yeah, get out of a 3 man front against the wishbone. They are going to track block flying off the ball. So, no way to twist or X-stunt. Bring your outside backers into the C-gaps with your corners handling the outside and TEs man to man. Fire through knees with the 5 guys on the line. Have your middle backer key the full back and blow him up every single play. The remaining linebackers cross key the half-backs for the first step and go into a fit-flow type technique for taking up any remaining gaps.

  • If you are running wingT then I would suggest you spend your time on wingT blocking rules. Zone blocking looks easy, but it takes as much practice time as any trapping/G scheme to do it well. My experience has been at the HS level. Teams that don't have big athletic lineman need good angles and deception ...AKA wing T, single Wing, double wing.

  • You should contact Bill Zwaan at West Chester University. They have been running the wing-t with a belly zone scheme.

  • First try going to some football coaching clinincs. Get some info on certain topics that interest you on off/def. Also positions, RB's, QB's, LB's, DB's,etc. I would first try youth football before you get into high school, unless you have a connection at the high school level.

  • We're running a Wing-T offense at the middle school I help out with. The problem I've come across is that we don't have incredibly athletic offensive linemen and we're having trouble with the traps and pulls because they can't get where they need to be quick enough. At their age, they want the football to be fun and not work like high school, so they're hesitant to really spend a lot of time memorizing their blocking rules and assignments. I realize they NEED to really work at it to be good, but I'm not convinced they will do it. I'm thinking of suggesting a switch to a zone blocking system. I don't want to get into a lot of the real sophisticated stuff, just the basic zone blocking concept. I think our boys would enjoy how simple a concept it is and respond to it. Does anyone know of any good drills that will help me implement this scheme. My e-mail is cramer.william@gmail.com. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • I'm glad someone asked that question because I was going to start a similar topic. I too would like to use zone blocking for our middle school Wing-T offense. We're not overly strong on the offensive line. We have smart and athletic guys. To me, we are perfect candidates for zone blocking. I think if I break it down real simple for my kids (ages 13-15), they will understand it. RIght now, with the blocking scheme we are using, the kids get numbers and assignments mixed up and our offense hasn't been real effective. Does anyone think the zone blocking has a realistic chance of working? The biggest thing I'm worried about is our guys making decisions mid play about who to block and some defender going free. Any advice on how to really drill it into their brains on how to implement this blocking scheme effectively? Thanks.

  • Coach, I coach the middle school level ( 7,8,9 )in Pennsylvania and we run the wing t. I think that you just need to be patient. Do you seperate the centers & gaurds from the tackles and tight ends to work on the blocking schemes for the sweeps & traps? While the tackles and tight ends work on the down blocks. Also run put in the Jet sweep and the Rocket, these are simple reach blocks for everyone except the tackle. He actually pulls outside and this is a easy block for him and it is pretty close to zone blocking. I don't think that zone blocking is the ansewer because they have to be able to read and react on the move!! Coach Barrick

  • The Zone scheme is good when you are good at it. It takes a very long time to get right, especially for younger kids. The best thing you can do for your guys is create angles for them. The Zone scheme is easy to remember, but can be difficult to execute, especially with combo blocks, pulling guards, tackles, etc.

  • I am a Pop warner midget level coach. Our CB's when playing man to man are often run out of a play to their side (sweep) by the WR on runs a deep fly route. Any thoughts how the CB can make the run read quicker (vs. pass) to attack a sweep to his side closer to the LOS?
Reply - Date: 2007-06-27 by: EmailDan
  • Bob, I would line your corners up 5 yards deep on inside eye of outside man at a 45 degree angle. This way your corner can read the o- tackle. If the OT fires out have him step up in run support, if he sits back or stands up have him backpeddle with his man in coverage. This will work 9 times out of ten, every once in awhile a crafty coach will have the lineman fire out on a pass play in some type of slide protection or zone blocking scheme but not often at that level.

  • Reply - Date: 2007-07-19 by: EmailCoach Chuy
  • Use "loose man tech"-jam w/outside hand, check ol, plant & attack if run-outside in; full speed crossover -no backpedal-if pass=squeeze the rec to the sideline/read qb Also blitz the edge to help vs sweep, pitch, reverse, etc. Alignment depends on wr split, hash marks, boundary but start 7 yds off los

    Reply - Date: 2007-04-12 by: EmailPat V
  • Well in you should set up a general man blocking scheme to begin with. then mix in some zone plays as a trump card.

  • Reply - Date: 2007-04-24 by: EmailKurt Clemens
  • Part of the appeal of Wing-T is the blocking schemes and angles that the blocking schemes take advantage of as well as false keys and misdirection. The schemes are complicated and as a coach you must teach multiple skills or techniques. I think the extra time teaching techniques pays off. One short cut is if you flip-flop your offensive line. This will cut down your teaching time with schemes. Without the down blocks and pulling guards the Wing-T is not really the Wing-T. The advantage of Zone blocking is that you only need to teach a minimal number of techniques and minimal schemes.

  • Coach, if you plan to play the DE in a 9 technique (outside shade on the TE) it is likely that the DE will have a C or D gap responsibility base on the block or release of the Tight End. The most important thing for a stand-up DE is a 1 on1 key/reaction drill against a TE. He needs to read the hat of the TE and react to a Down Block, Reach or Hook Block, Base Block and an Outside Release. He needs to master the reactions to these blocks according to your scheme. If he gets a Down block, you can add a FB kickout or a kickout from a Guard. Your scheme will dictate how the blocks are played. Contact me directly for more details.

Also go to your states Athletic Association web site for football job postings. Nike and Glazier clinics are good ones to start out with. You can also look into AFCA, but their clinic just passed.

I feel that the DE's should not get up field but be able to handle the C or D gap ( weak or strong) and be able to not let anything outside of them. Great footwork is imperative, therefore we worked with bags on the g

  • I'll probably won't have a Q.B. this year and my backups are in another division. I have 3-4 running backs and about 1-2 receivers. None of my runningbacks or receivers have experience at quarterbacking... Any suggestions of what kind of offense would you run??
Reply - Date: 2009-02-10 by: EmailCoach Knight
  • I would run the Double Wing. The QB needs to be able to run ball fakes, and handoffs. He also must lead block. Which should be an easy transition for a WR or RB. It is a run-based offense, which takes pressure off the QB.

  • Reply - Date: 2009-05-05 by: EmailCoach Goode
  • I would suggest the veer. Simplier reads than the wing-t with no need to teach the motions that go along with the wing. The blocking concepts are the same and if one of your guys proves to have some ability passing the ball its easy to transition into a short or deep game passing attack.

  • Reply - Date: 2009-05-17 by: EmailCoach P
  • Both of these responses are the same. One is a formation from which you can run the veer. Research Paul Johnson or Mike Sewak. Everything is about repetition once your base rules are in place. Also look for Georgia Tech, Wofford, Navey, these schools all run this style offense.

  • I am a head jv football coach and I am trying to find a way to make some of my players tougher, or at least less timid. I know if there was one solution for this, whoever thought of it would be a millionaire by now, but I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions. One thing that I thought of was adding some work on a boxing heavy bag during weight room sessions. My thinking is that striking the bag might help them get over the hurdle of timidness, and make them more physical and apt to strike the opponent lined up across from them during the season. Has anyone utilized this before? Are there any other suggestions? Anything you have would be greatly appreciated.

  • Something that I have found works well for me is to have drills be highly competitive. Keeping points for both the offense and defense in drills. Those who score the least point either have drops or some other motivator. I found this creates an atmosphere of competitive intensity. Im sure you could use any other motivator you wanted. I personaly just think that going more live and being comptitive works well to create intensity.

  • We run a 4-3 defense. My question regards triple option responsibility. We have always had the tackles assigned to dive, ends on QB and OLB's take the pitch. MLB plays dive to QB to pitch. We play a lot of cover 2 so the corners are also there to force on pitch. We will also run a stunt off the edge to switch the QB & pitch assignements and create confusion. Who agrees and disagrees and why?
    Reply - Date: 2009-01-01 by: EmailCoach P
  • The 4-3 can definately defend the triple option in the way you describe. Twisting the tackles with linebackers also creates read confusion. The problem is that a good veer team would run mid-line against the 4-3. Blocking the MLB, PSLB, and DE and reading the tackle. It is a double option that is very good against the 4-3.

  • Reply - Date: 2009-01-06 by: EmailCurtis
  • Thanks coach P. I was looking for confirmation that the way I described was sound. We are moving to the 4-3 froma a 3-4 and re-writing some of the playbook. We are mainly focusing on base assignments. I agree with you on veer teams and the midline. Of course those teams have to make those blocks. We have always seen a couple of what I call "flex bone" teams. With the success GT had until they ran into LSU I suspect we could see more in the coming years.

  • Does anyone have any advice for me on how to get into coaching? I have no direct experience as I went the Finance route after college, but I am a very fast learner and love the game. I am willing to give up a great career to do something I love - I just don't know how to go about making the transition. I'm used to working 100+ hour weeks and was a Varsity athlete in High School (baseball). I have a MS in Finance and work at a top hedge fund (which I realize is completely unrelated, but should somewhat exemplify my work ethic). If anyone has any suggestions on how to get started, they would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  • Congrats in your decision. I did the same thing 5 months ago and it has been the greatest decision I have ever made. First off start identifying anyone you know that is a teacher or coach. This is a profession of who you know not what you know. Next, start working on your teachers certification. My experience has been that you pretty much have to start out at the Jr. High level first and work your way up. Next start sending and posting your resume to every available school district. Remember, do not hold out for the perfect job and take something as soon as possible to get your foot in the door. Feel free to email with any questions!! Good Luck!

  • are you looking to become a teacher, or just coach? I started out coaching football and then eventually became a teacher. However, that does not have to be the case. Find a local high school and look into being a volunteer coach. That is the way that I started out, and then after a year i got hired on the staff officially. It may stink putting in so much time and not seeing a paycheck, but you will get some of the most valuable experience that way. It will open up so many more doors for you. Good luck!

  • I'm a college level backup center (didnt play much this year due to an injury) the main problem i noticed i have is that i am ten times more explosive when i am not snapping i was wondering if anyone knew drills and things i could do during the offseason to improve my explosion while snapping?
Reply - Date: 2008-11-29 by: EmailRod
  • REPETITION REPETITION REPETITION!! The snap is the last thing you need to be thinking about and needs to be a fluid motion. My suggestion is to always work with a ball when performing your normal drills.

  • Reply - Date: 2009-05-05 by: EmailCoach Goode
  • I myself was a college and high school center and what i suggest is check your stance first. What is the primary difference between the two. When you have the ball are you sitting too much or leaning slightly towards the ball? Are you feet even or slightly off-set? Answer these questions then experiment with them to check for improvement. Once you find an even balance work on get offs with the ball and someone to take snaps. Go forward and side to side. Practice making a quick first step and not dragging your trailing foot behind. Finally get into the weight room and work the squats, power clean, deadlift, stepups. Oh and run bleachers if you got them. goodluck.

  • Does anyone have a template of how they formulate the plays on the armband for offensive players; i.e., Formation, Motion, Play (Pass/Run)? This would be a huge help to eventually be able to run a no huddle offense.
Reply - Date: 2009-02-11 by: Emailcoachberlin
  • Go to the cutters gloves website. They have a free template on thier site, you might have to reduce the size when you make copies of them because they tend to be larger than some wrist coaches.

I have been using and studying the 3-3-5 for about 4 yrs now and have built up a collection of good playbooks for this defense. If anyone would like a copy any let me know. I have been running this at both levels for 4 years now and it has been tremendous for me and my players. I would enjoy talking with fellow coaches who also run it or would like to.

  • We just put in the "triple screen" that was featured in the magazine. So far, we have ran it once on a 4th and 3 and scored a 40 yard touchdown by giving the ball to TB in the middle. Maybe you can tweak it to where your TE slips in there and your TB runs a flare to draw attention.

  • Who have WR drills for soft hands or better cushion the football? Thanks Coach Nic
Reply - Date: 2008-04-24 by: EmailDustin Humphreys
  • First thing is to explain to your players that you don't catch the football with your hands but actually with your fingertips. When you catch a football, your fingertips are what stop the trajectory of the ball and secure it. Also, there are essentially two positions your hands should be. If a pass is above the elbows then the the thumbs and index fingers of both hands should always be touching. If the pass is below the elbows then the two pinky fingers should always be touching. Now that you have the hands part down, do some drills where the the football is thrown to your players high, low, to the left, to the right, etc. so they know how to adjust their fingers and hands. Next, do drills while they run from sideline to sideline (as if they were running a pattern over the middle of a defense) throwing the ball high or low and making them adjust. In addition to those drills you can do one-handed receiver drills where you gently throw it over their shoulder and practice catching it with one hand. This drill helps a lot with concentration on the football all the way until it is secured into the body. There are numerous other drills you can do. If you need any help then E-mail me.

  • Coaches, I am a youth level coach who is interested in the Spin offense. Has anyone out there tried this at the youth level? I think it would be devastating but I have a hard time finding a center who can effectively "shot gun snap" and I am concerned about the mesh. Does anyone have any drills they recommend for a young snapper? Also, we currently run an I fromation G series offense and the high school used some zone blocking this past year. I am very tenative to apply the zone approach; could the spin be effective with a base/man scheme. Finally, before spending a bunch of money, do the videos really help more than the articles? A recommended "best video" from anyone? Thank you, kimmes81@yahoo.com

  • Coach, I would search on the web for Notre Dame box, single wing plays. These are a lot of the spin elements (the spin is actually an enhancement on the box, I don't care what anybody may say). But in the playbook of the box you'll discover Wing-T blocking rules that should be pretty simple to teach to that age group, (down, down, kick, etc). But you will get all the backfield movement of the spin if you run the counter and spinner series out of the box. Ryan Poe Head Football Coach Woodlawn High School

  • I would start with a type of double eagle formation. Line up in Eagle with Sam outside on the LOS playing the wing, Will same on other side. 7-5-1-3-5-7. Bring strong safety into the box with Mike and play 2 techniques. Cover 3 behind it. Prepare players for lots of trapping and try and spill everything. Many other ways but without seeing film, good start.

My organization doesn't have much coaching/player experience. I myself started four years ago as a dad holding a dummie for my son's first team. I could really use some help because of my lack of experience I don't have old coaches to go to for help. I really want to turn our organization around and get on a winning path and prepare our kids for highschool. If anyone could offer some help it would really be helping me to change the lives of some great kids.

Reply - Date: 2008-02-10 by: EmailLB Coach
  • it all starts with penetration. If youre facing a zone scheme emphasize to your DL that they must get off the ball. Also stress the importance of not getting reached by the OL. Slanting your defensive line will also give you an edge.

  • Reply - Date: 2008-05-11 by: EmailCoach Millspaugh
  • Coach, We are a 4-3 team and we do several things to limit the gain of a stretch or zone run. First, we stress technique to our front four. We work on separation with their hands and how to fight the reach block. Second, we work with our linebackers about getting downhill and taking away cutback lanes. Finally, we play lots of quarters coverage, which gets our safeties involved in the run game. Ideally, we want the ball to spill outside to one of our unblocked safeties.

  • You need to rely on your DT's and MLB's. Your DT can plug those A gaps by pinching or by slanting to the strength they run to. Keep the A and B gaps filled with the DT and MLB.

Reply - Date: 2007-10-08 by: EmailDaniel Kennamore
  • Make sure you don't waste a block with your false key. Take your playside tackle and account for their trap-playing linebacker(usually mike). Use any tight ends or wings to account for outside backers. Pull and kick out playside with your playside guard. Block back with the center. Trap first man past center with backside guard. Scoop playside with the backside guard. And show sweep with the backs not getting the ball. Ball track should be right up the center's rear end.

  • What is everyone's opinion of the Option System for a high school program. I hear everyone talking about the Wing T but I've never been a fan of the norm or conservative. I believe in the theory that running the offense that the majority of the league does not run you will be much more successful as you'll be harder to prepare for and therefore more likely to win games over your opponents. Personally I am a huge fan of the Shotgun Spread/Singleback offenses. It allows you to spread the defense out and run draws and delayed counters and a large quantity of trick plays while still keeping you opponent wondering if you're going to pass the ball on every down that you have possession of the ball because of your team being in the shotgun. What are your thoughts?

  • I run the option at the high school level and find it very effedtive. Most teams we play do run the wing t or a spread offence. I find it that most teams we play have a hard time defending it because of our mesh points and solid runners at all of our backfield spots. I think you have to run the option in high school because it keeps the speed rushing DE out of the back field and you can open up the pass a little more and more each time you run the option.

  • Take a 52 front and replace the DE's with your starting DT's. Insert your biggest Dlineman as DT's and have the DE's attack the down block of the TE/WB. Blow the plays up one yard deep in the backfield. Your DT's (now DE's) will outsize and overpower most FB/WB's. Besides even a stalemate favors the defense. Then play an aggressive Cover 2 behind it. You can even take out your CB's and insert LB's for them. They ain't in the DBL Wing if they can throw the ball consistetly.

  • Running a 4-3 cover 2. Looking for suggestions or comments on Corner alignment. I've noticed that some teams place their corners 2-3 yards off but on the out side shoulder of the #1. While other teams will place their corners on #1 with inside leverage. Just looking for comments thanks.
Reply - Date: 2007-08-11 by: Emaildjm
  • If you are running cover 2, you have to keep outside leverage on #1. If not your CB's will get beat to the boundry and the SS/FS won't be able to get to the hole from the hash. Cover 2 requires the CB to jam all routes inside to the FS/SS.

  • Fit flow linebacker play will put you right in position from a 4-3 to stop the veer option. Your base responisibilities should be end has dive, mike has qb, and outside backer has pitch. Also, switch responsibilities every now and then to create turnovers (ex.invert cov.2, end and mike have dive, outside has pitch immediately, safety running alley unimpeded to qb)

  • If you have established a good running game, quick, three step passes, and quick hitting Play Action passes work well against 6-2/3. We see this defense alot in the redzone, so we work against it...our waggle play (wing-t style) works well for us against these types of defenses.

  • Just got in for a week from Germany, will be returning ...depending on the level of football ...HS & Semi-pro ...found that using Flexbone, 3 Step Routes & Combos, can overpower a 6-2...particularly on the flats. Key on on the Flexbone is your Ace Back ...If you can count on him for 3 yds ...the 2nd or 3rd play on a sequence is a good set up ...regardless of length of field.

  • Reply - Date: 2007-07-02 by: EmailCoach J
  • We have alot of success G-blocking against a 6-2 because the ends usually stand up and play far outside and there isn't much LB support inside. If you have an extra man to block send a FB through the hole to lead.

  • Is it possible to run the triple option out of no backs at pre-snap? Have the FB go in flat motion and then break into the los at his same veer angle. Have the TB from a slot, shuffle back for position to receive the pitch. Is this possible?
    Reply - Date: 2007-08-15 by: EmailHC D
  • It is easyer from a one-back set than with no backs. With and empty backfield the pitch man has a very long path to go so he must be very quick. With a one-back set the full back is already in place and the pitch man can go in motion along his track. Another way to go is a speed option reducing to a two-man option insted of a tripple option.

  • Coach, I feel that cut blocking could get into problems during a game. Some refs are quick to call an illegal block. Believe me, I've gone through your situation. The best tool I found to give my kids was the Crab Block. They not only were low, but they stayed with their blocks longer. Also, we could practice it against our defense and not worry about ankles and knees. This made us play with lower pads on defense. We benefited on both sides of the ball.

    Reply - Date: 2007-06-24 by: Emailsmin20
  • Veer does not mean option, although it is often associated with the optioin. When running the veer you hand off to the running back off tackle without blocking the end. This works well against ends the go hard upfield. The running back tries to hit inside the end. This frees up a blocker to block someone else.

We have five quality running backs and are looking to run a more power oriented offense. We thought the inverted bone or the diamond wing as I have heard it called will help us to have a more physical attack while still keeping some facets of our veer offense. We decided to implement the scheme based on a lack of defensive linemen. We started with the run fits that fit our personel. We assigned weak A to the nose and Strong A to the mike. The Willie and Sam had B Gap and the ends had C. from that we looked at pressures and who fit behind the stunters. We will cross gap with the front and the backers or we will overload and fit with secondary. As we stunt from the secondary we work the other direction in terms of coverage responsibility

We ran a double slot formation and motioned the pitch back about 2 steps into the backfield prior to the snap. The biggest deficiency seemed to be not enough of a counter game to keep the defense home. The most effective plays we had that went against motion were a throwback slant back to the backside SE and a reverse to the slotback that didn't

  • We run a lot of counters that keep the defense home on the backside. We are able to run counters with our FB, wings and QB. We also have alot of success with them and it opens up our base plays because the Defense does not slide with motion and it gives us better angles for our blocks.

We get handled easily up front because we aren't strong enough. We have good technique, we just over powered. On defense, they dive their big strong RB behind their big FB and we can't tackle them. • I agree with Coach, use a zone based cut blocking system. This allows you to double and scrape to the second level as well as chopping down a hard rushing DL player. I would also suggest using some Severe Angle Blocking on your playside while pulling your weakside guards and tackles. This will help capitialize on your speed and give your smaller linemen better blocking angles.

  • Regarding your Defense Line, depends on what type of defense you run. If smaller players look into running a gap control 44 stack against teams that want to run over you. The keys are to make sure your players depth across the offensive line is only as deep as the O-linemens rear ends. Use simple slant calls (i.e. Slant Left all the down linemen slant left while your stacked LB slant right) This gives you a slam and pinch on the e

  • I had the size problem last year. On offense we ran a spread 2 x 2 with our QB under center. I agree with the other coaches advocating a cut blocking scheme. We did this and had very good success against d-linemen who outweighed us by up to 50 lbs. per man. We also used very wide splits on running plays. This allowed us to rely less on drive blocking and get the full value out of cut blocking. We also used the Jet and Rocket sweep

  • Coach, I suggest running 3-3-5 with multiple blitzes. We tried it last year and were very successful. Originally we were concerned with Pass coverage but we ran Cov. 1 (man/free) Cov 0 (straight man) and Cov 2 Man. We did not press with our corners, except in Cov 2 Man and we were able to do a decent job covering receivers. We also doubled our interceptions and sacs from the year before. We also were able to play the run by blitzing every down!!! We confused most offenses with our blitzes. We liked this defense also because when game planning we were able to "attack" offensives instead of "defending"

So have them "lay some wood" on each other early into the practice. Then their juices are flowing right away and that energy carries into the rest of your practice. Email me if you'd like some diverse hitting drills to use in this phase of th

We've had problems with big teams that run between the tackles but overall this defense has been very effective. I run it with man-free, cover 2 or 3 equally well. • I was a 5'9" 175 lb Quarterback, so my goals of playing D1 football were pretty much slim to none. My advice to you is do what I did and work as a Student Assistant at a D1 program. During my four years at East Carolina, I worked closely with Steve Logan and his staff and was awarded a G.A. spot just one year after getting my bachelors. I have since left the college game but I learned a great deal. Words of advice to you buddy....Show up 10 minutes early and be the last one to leave. Keep your mouth shut and work as hard as you possibly can.

We put the dummies on the field and assisted the coaches with drills. I went with the DB coach. I learned a lot of drills. Got to travel with the team sometimes. When I graduated I couldn't find a high school job so I went to grad school. I asked the HC if I could be a GA s

We do not take post graduates; however we are always looking for foreign students who are interested in playing h.s. athletics in America and getting an opportunity to get a strong academic experience as well. In order to have any of your boys apply to our school, please contact me. They must be strong students first. Hope to hear back from you.

  • I am a high school junior and would like to coach D1A football someday. My question is: How difficult is it to get a graduate assistantship on the coaching staff of a D1A school? I am a good football player, but most likely not 1A material. I will most likely play for a D1AAA school, volunteer coach for midgets and/or freshman ball as much as possible while earning my Bachelor's, then apply for D1A graduate assistantships. Do I have a chance going this route?
Reply - Date: 2006-05-12 by: EmailCoach Sumner
  • It is extremely difficult (very competitive) to get a GA position at a D1 school if you do not play at that level. To get in you would have to have strong connections to the program...that's why former players usually get the nods. They already know the system the coach has in place, and they have the trust of the coach because they earned it by playing for him. You can do it by working for the program in some other way and getting your foot in the door.

  • Offensive Line Play I have put together a DVD that teaches offensive line play, without using a sled. Teaching offensive line play on a sled can be effective, however it is not 100 percent realistic. Many programs do not have the money to afford sleds as well. This DVD has over 20 run blocking drills and 7 pass protection drills that you can use everyday to teach offensive line play without having to use a sled. If you are interested, please email me at Mike_27_1@yahoo.com . References are available upon request. Thank you.

  • Learn as much as you can from other coaches and attend clinics, if you have a youth football program in your area try that first. The fathers usually like to coach their sons so depending on the level of the kids it could get tough to get on a staff. I started out at the 5-7 year olds ,it took time but I moved up to High school, don't be afraid to ask.

  • I was wondering if I could get some insight on the best defense to run in a region where you see a mixture of spread offense and wing T? What is the best base for kids to adjust to such extremes from week to week? What about line stunts?
Reply - Date: 2006-05-12 by: EmailCoach Sumner
  • Coach, I think one of the most versatile defensive schemes is the Split 4 (4-4). It is a gap control defense that can be manipulated to defend against anything an offense throws at you. It allows for simple rules/fundamentals but can also be as complicated as you wish. I think nearly any scheme will work as long as you stick to the fundamentals and design a focus around what you want your defense to accomplish. Some player skills/abilities need to be taken into account in determining what will suit your level of athleticism. Developing an identity is extremely important. You cannot change schemes every week, ie., 3-5 to 4-4, to 4-3, to 5-2...etc. If your athletes buy into what you\'re trying to sell them in terms of a scheme, they will be successful as long as you communicate responsibilities clearly and develop sound game-plans. We play against 5 Wing-T teams and 2 spread teams in our district (high school level). This base defense allows us to do what we want and be very successful without changing our identity/scheme. We held the Wing-T teams avg. yards/game to under 150, and the spread teams to under 200 this past season. We gave up less than 215yds/game for the season and less than 10 pts/game...and we are not graduating/sending any athletes to colleges that play above the D3 level. Please feel free to e-mail me anytime if you are looking for more information or have any questions.

  • Forget about giving your defense a name i.e. 4-4- split 6- 5-2 ect. Doing so restricts your thinking. Try this: Against Wing-T offenses force the center to block the backside of the play. Keep him away from the POA. If you play two DT's both in 2 techniques, and slant the weakside tackle into the center, you can take away the effectiveness of the diving FB...force center to block away...and disrupt the offside pulling guard. Take away

  • Reply - Date: 2007-10-08 by: EmailDaniel Kennamore
  • Be careful about trying to outscheme your opponent with your defense. Put your guys in THEIR best place to make a play and make sure you've got all gaps accounted for. With the Wing T, I would recommend cross keying the guards with your inside backers. Also, try practicing team defense without a ball for a couple of days to get your linebackers to trust their reads. Here's the secret to beating the spread. ZERO COVERAGE. If you can't cover those receivers for 3 seconds and the qb is worth his weight in manure, then you're going to get picked apart anyway. Line stunts are overrated, any decent offensive lineman who has been in the spread system more than a year will be able to pass set quickly enough to keep twists in front of them and bump off. You've got to bring more than they can block and jump the back. (The quarterback is going to be coached to find the back when he is in trouble.)

  • I am an advid football fan and truly looking to get into coaching full time. I been doing so since 1995 at different levels. I have coached youth, middle school, high school and had the opportunity to help with the university of Hawaii at one point. I have since come back home to Fayetteville, NC and recently got out of the military. I am looking to solidify my coaching arena by securing either a JV or Varisity high school team coaching position. I have the experience - other than the coaching in various levels, I have started my own youth football league here in Fayetteville and have recently been announced as the State Rep for NC for the Offense-Defense youth league. I feel I have a lot to offer our youth and if there is anything you can do to steer me inthe right direction it would be appreciated.

  • I'm a Strength & Conditioning Coach in Delaware seeking a Junior College, D2, D3 Strength & Conditioning Coaching position in Pennsylvania, Maryland,or New Jersey. I will consider other states.I design Periodized (Science Based) Strength & Conditioning Programs, including Interval Speed Training Programs, and Plyometrics. My Interval Speed Training programs reduce an Athlete's 40 time by .2-.25 of a second within 7 weeks, and increase the Squat 1RM Strength from 6RM x 315 to 8RM X 405 within 7 weeks. My programs maximize an Athlete's Strength, Power, Speed, and Agility. I also design Combine Training Training Programs.I'm seeking an Off-Site Coaching/Consulting position where I can create, design and implement a College Football program's Strength & Conditioning program in conjunction with the College's Coaching Staff. I'm Unable to perform Coaching functions on the Campus site at this time, probably sometime in the future. I realize this is an odd an non-traditional Coaching position search and request. I implicitily believe in my Conditioning programs and Coaching ability. Want to turn-around a program into a proud traditional, winning Football program.See my Website: www.leaguelineup.com/football-conditioning for my training methodologies, comprehensive knowledge, and Conditioning programs, and how much they transform an Athlete's Strength, Power and Speed Measurables and ability to display optimal performance with the opportunity to dominate the competition.Jim WatkinsBuilder of AthletesFormer Minor League Football Player/WR-CBNewark, DE302-738-6623em: sportscond@hotmail.com

  • I would suggest you go to the Texas High School Coaches Association web site, as they have a job board, as well as a place to post your experience and resume. Also, there are many private schools in the Central Texas area, that use full and part time coaches, who are not directly employed by the school. Some public schools in Texas are doing that aswell, but they are in your more highly densely populated areas. Good luck

I currently have a temporary teaching certificate in middle grades (6-9) sciences, but I am qualified to hold certs. in HS biology, English, social studies, and journalism. If you know of any openings for a motivated, hard working young coach, please let me know. Thank you.

I have been a head coach and defensive coordinator and I am well versed in all the types of defenses run. I can always learn more. I am currently learning and adding to the 3-3-5. I thank you for your help and advice. Look foward to talking with you. Sincerely, Kevin

  • I have been an offensive coordinator for 4 years at a high school in Maryland. I am looking to move to another level of football. I do not have a degree. Does anyone have any ideas. When I got to the school they were 3-47 with a 30 game losing streak. My first year we were 4-6 we have been .500 since. We also only had 50 kids now we have 125. I expect us to have a playoff year this year. I would love to move on to more competive level.

  • GENESEE COUNTY PATRIOTS AAA MINOR LEAGUE FOOTBALL NORTH AMERICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE GCPATRIOTS.COM The Genesee County Patriots are a AAA Minor League Football team based in Flint, Michigan (roughly one hour north of Detroit). The Patriots are members of the North American Football League (NAFL); The NAFL is the world's largest Minor League with over 120 teams in the US and Canada. We are seeking a Head Football Coach for the 2009 Minor League Football Season which is a Summer/Fall based schedule. Coaching duties with a Minor League team do not conflict with normal High School Varsity Coaching Duties. I can say this from personal experience as I am the Varsity Offensive Coordinator for Flint's Southwestern Academy. I am the Director of Operations for the Patriots and currently the Interim Head Coach for the current season. Minor League teams have a limited mandatory practice schedule which enables coaches with a tight schedule or retired coaches the ability to continue in the sport they love without the time a Varsity High School or college program would require. We are only able to offer a small stipend currently, but are continually working to improve our budget. We have additional assistant positions available but as of right now these positions are volunteer. Feel free to visit our website at GCPatriots.com and contact me by email at Brad@GeneseeCountyPatriots.com Looking forward to hearing from you all. www.GCPatriots.com

  • I am a soon to be graduate and I am looking to be a GA. I was wondering what is the best possible route that I could go about obtaining a GA position? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Start sending out resumes to all levels of school, D1-D3 and JC as well. If you know any high school coaches or college coaches talk with them to help keep an eye for any openings. Attend the AFCA conv. in January, Join the AFCA and become a member, network yourself, at the convention, have lunch with people, but don't be looking for a job, don't introduce yourself and then ask about a job, get to know some coaches, ask for advice, keep your ears open. At a smaller school like a D2-D3 or JC, you will get to coach a position and have other responsibilities, learn more about coaching. Get to know some high school coaches, they always hear of openings, and who's looking for GA's. Good Luck

  • Hi Coaches, I'm looking for some advice. For the past four years, I've been living and teaching in Thailand. When my wife finishes her master's degree in March, we will be moving back to Minnesota where I plan to get my teaching certificate and begin my coaching career. I'm 26 years old and coached 9th grade football while I was in college. Upon graduating I moved abroad for a new experience. I'm looking into two possible paths for next season (2008). I can either take an assistant position in a local high school or I can try to get a volunteer position at the local NAIA school. From there I plan to apply for a graduate assistant position. What are my chances of accomplishing the second route and what advice do you experienced coaches have for me. Thanks in advance!

  • The North East Hurricanes Semi Pro Football program is seeking a volunteer Linebackers coach for the 2006 season. The North East Hurricanes are a proud member of the New England Football League and play and practice at Amesbury High School in Amesbury, Massachusetts. Practices will be held on Wednesday evenings at 8pm and games will be held on Saturday evenings or afternoons; film assignments need to be completed by each Monday on your own time table. The semi pro level of football is geared towards the working man's schedule; generally semi pro players consist of players that have completed their academic careers, did not go on to professional leagues, but still have a desire to play the game. The Linebacker coach position will work under the supervision of the Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator. Duties include a 25 minute individual skills period each practice, evaluation of player linebacker personnel, sideline substitution coordination on game day, scouting reports from film study of up coming opponent's interior offensive line and running backs, possible special teams duties, and possible recruiting assignments. Appropriate candidates will have some coaching experience and/or have recent collegiate playing experience, have great attention to detail in regards to the technical aspects of linebacker play, and have great enthusiasm for the game. Interested parties please contact Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator Aaron Beineke at 978-761-3860

  • I am the owner of a football team playing A2 division Italian Football League, Our team has not missed a play off berth in the last 5 seasons but we still need what can make us win the championship. We are currently looking for a head football coach who can take our team in winning division A2 and go to A1. We need a coach with good college experience and who can coach both sides of the ball. We can consider a multi year contract and we need our coach to be in italy from december to july every year.

  • I am ordering sleds to be used by a youth football program. We have a 7-8th grade and a 5-6th grade teams without weight restrictions. Should I order Adult or Youth 7-, 2- and 1-(Popcicle) man sleds? Their is quite a difference in weight between the two sizes. I don't want to purchase adult equipment only to find that the kids can't properly execute drive or compress and lift techniques. Your experience and advice is appreciated.

    AFMarticleAFM Article:  Stealing Signals
  • How can one "steal" what is sent to all? If my people don't fake well enough to fool your people, is that cheating? Then if you don't signal well enough, or fast enough, or disguise - it would be difficult to show how an opponent is cheating!

    AFMarticleAFM Article:  Stealing Signals
  • Signal stealing is a poor term. It should be called signal interception. It's a part of playing on the gridiron. If a team chooses to use the advantage of signals, then that team must be prepared for the risk of signal interception. In the military, we use wireless communications knowing full and well it is open for interception by the enemy. Of course, this knowledge forces us to use crypto or manipulate the way our messages are transmitted and received. In other words, we should ACCEPT the risk of signal interception and perform risk management on whether to use them or not. If coaches want to go through the trouble encrypting the signals (disadvantage to the kids) to avoid signal interception, so be it. If coaches do not want to confuse the players but use the time advantages of signals, then accept the risk of interception. If the risk is much greater than the reward, relay the signals through a player.

AFMarticleAFM Article:    - More Solutions to Problem
  • First the head coach must be the pro active one in this matter. Have a plan drawn out and let his assistants know what is expected of them. We always use our second scrimmage as a tool to rehearse teh live situation in a relaxed atomosphere. The offensive guy in the booth is to keep the signal caller on track for the next play based on the game plan, the defensive guy lets the sideline know of any personell changes or down and distance tendencies for which we already have a call planned for. But the most important thins is ALL caoches must be on the same page and this is done before the first sanp is ever taken on Friday night.

AFMarticleAFM Article:  Attacking the Red Zone by Air
  • That is perhaps the most insightful article on how to attack in the red zone through the air that I have read in quite a while. Seriously, the person who wrote this article is nothing less than a genius. Unlike a lot of coaches these days, this guy is an intellectual. Intellectual coaches are a dying breed. I can only think of few that have coached in the modern era Among them: Marty Schottenheimer, Marv Levy, Bo Pelini, Buddy Teevens, Terry Allen, and Ron Prince.

AFMarticleAFM Article:  Meshing the Veer and Mid-Line vs. Odd and Even Fronts
  • Great article! I am grateful to Coach Green because he gave me my first head coaching position in high school at Surrattsville. While there, I learned first hand about the midline and veer option attack and it is deadly. I even used it one year at the Pound (youth) ball level and only had to scrap it because of injuries. I look forward to seeing Coach Green and his Spread Veer attack at Eleanor Roosevelt High School. Keep up the good work and great article.

  • I want to know more about the "spin" offense, and would like to know if any one has bought the videos from AFM and how in depth are they about teaching the offence, OL blocking, back's steps, etc. The DVDs are 21mins, 31 mins, with game film. It just doesn't seem that there is enough time to teach you about the offense specifics. If you have bought the videos, let me know your over all thoughts on them, and tell me what one would be the best to teach me the basics.

AFMarticleAFM Article:  Meshing the Option with the West Coast Offense
  • I think the option loses some of its effectivesness in the gun. The reason we run it out of double slot is to give the defense the same look every time. I want them to see motion every play. Once the get that sense of security, playaction hits them in the mouth.

  • I'm looking for a football coaching job at either a college or high school. I played football throughout high school. I was the star at my high school Rye High, Rye, New York and I received a scholarship to play at Springfield. I'd prefer New York, Massachusetts or Southern California. Thanks!!! Chris Feeney

    AFMarticleAFM Article:  Lufkin
  • I've come across the reference to a "blood end" in some literature, including this article. I've also heard reference to a "blood stunt" involving an end. Can anyone tell me what the "blood" adjective refers to? Thanks.
Reply - Date: 2007-08-12 by: Emailfenton
  • This refers to a defensive end with no responsibility but to attack and Bloody the ball carrier

  • Reply - Date: 2007-08-11 by: Emaildjm
  • The blood stunt is a DE (43/44) or DT (34/52) crashing hard towards the FB dive and then going straight upfield to the QB. It messes up the QB give read. A crashing Dlineman means pull the ball, so he pulls and then gets clobbered by the Dlineman on the upfield charge. We used to call it an "up" stunt. Hope this helps.

AFMarticleAFM Article:  Three Deep Coverage Principles
  • I think this is a great article, but have one serious problem with the diagrams. I am unable to read the print in most of the diagrams. This is vital to the article and information I wish to review. I attempted to buy a back issue, but was told this issue is unavailable (I joined just after this issue so I don't have the orignal). Can you please suggest anything or help me with this problem. I would apreciate any help. Thanks - Lawrenece

    AFMarticleAFM Article:  Objectives in 2007
  • I would like to see more specifics about strength training. I don't really care about what college weight rooms look like. I would like to see what exercise are critical to football players and how to do those exercises correctly, pros and cons of specific exercises, etc.

AFMarticleAFM Article:  Schutt Sports High School Coach of the Year
    Steve Tutsie
  • I find it hard to say a coach of the year should come from a new coach that took over a program that has won the last three state championships. He did a great job because winning a state championship is not easy but he didnt have to build it from the ground up just reload.

    AFMarticleAFM Article:  The Situation
  • From this same formation, I would run what we call a 709 Arrow The linemen would gate block by turning their backs to the strong side sending the fullback on a pattern out of the I at the deep safety on the right side, the Tb would block the perimeter defender to the playside. I would release the TE into the flat angling at the yardage necessary for the first down. The wide receiver with the corner playing hard or tight on him would release outside and run a deep fade to run off his defender. The Qb would read the strong side corner playing on the LOS. If the corner runs off with the WR, the Qb would throw to the TE. If the corner stays in the flat, we would throw to the TE on the arrow.

    AFMarticleAFM Article:  The Situation
  • While many of the answers coaches gave were very good and the sitution merits tough decision making, I think it's missing a couple of elements that are very important. There is no mention of what plays were run on 1st and 2nd down. This would have great bearing on what play to run on third down. For example: If the 2nd down play was a power or blast and yielded 5 yards then that might set up a pop pass to the TE. It's very difficult to know what play to run without knowing what took place on the two former plays.
