High School Notes

Spotlight

Division 1-A Coach of the Year Lou Holtz
- It was enough that the Notre Dame coaching legend guided South Carolina to the biggest one-year turnaround in Southeastern Conference history. But more remarkable, is the way he did it. The 63-year-old abandoned some of his old standards and implemented an offensive and defensive style that left longtime Lou-watchers gasping. He also used tactics other coaches would dismiss as too New Age: He got his players to tell their teammates about their rocky pasts so the entire team could move forward together. And guess what? It worked.

Division I-A Coach of the Year Runners-Up
- Oklahoma's Bob Stoops, Notre Dame's Bob Davie, Oregon State's Dennis Erickson and UTEP's Gary Nord

Division I-AA, II, III, NAIA and Junior college Coaches of the Year

High School Coach of the Year Cathedral Prep (Erie, Pa.) Mike Mischler
- He gave up a six-figure job in sales to pursue the career he loves - coaching football. It paid off this year when his team snared the state title a year after they lost it when one of his own calls backfired.
