Mid-Season Top Performances

Quarterback David Koral of Palisades (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) set a new national single-game record by passing for 764 yards during a 48-30 win over Grant (Van Nuys) on Sept. 22. The old record of 672 yards was set by Rhett Lashlee of Shiloh Christian (Springdale, Ark.), according to the Student Sports national record book.

Tyler Ebell of Ventura (Calif,) rushed for over 300 yards in five straight games - including one 400-yard performance — from Sept. 8-Oct. 6. Ebell, a 5-foot-9, 175-pound senior was on pace to become only the fourth California prep running back to rush for over 3,000 yards in a season.

Running back Donta Hickson from McKinney (Texas) rushed for 421 yards and six touchdowns in a 44-20 win over The Colony on Oct. 6.

The Connecticut single-game rushing record fell on Oct. 13, when Tim Washington of Bristol Central ran for 449 yards and seven touchdowns in a 55-13 win over Platt (Meridian). Washington smashed the old record of 345 yards, which had stood since 1979.

Senior running back Noah Ingram of Ruleville Central became the new all-time rushing leader in the state of Mississippi with 7,562 yards. Ingram broke the record on Oct. 13 during a 20-0 win versus Shaw.

Male (Louisville, Ky.) became only the fourth high school in the nation to win 700 games on Oct. 13, by beating cross-town rival Ballard, 58-28.

Benson new rushing king in Texas

The prolific high school football career of Midland (Texas) Lee running back Cedric Benson reached another milestone on Sept. 29. The 5-11, 205-pound senior moved to 6,194 yards for his career after gaining 209 yards in a 44-7 win over El Paso Coronado.

Benson, who was the Gatorade state player of the year last season and the first high school player to ever grace the cover of Texas Football magazine, eclipsed the old record of 6,189 set by Jerrod Douglas of Judson (Converse) in 1983.

Benson has verbally committed to play at the University of Texas next season.

Florida state association giving tougher punishment for ejections

Football players who are ejected from high school games in the state of Florida are facing a tougher penalty for their actions this year. A new rule passed by the Florida High School Activities Association includes fines for the school of the offending player as well as suspensions from games for up to six weeks.

For what the FHSAA terms as "gross unsportsmanlike conduct," meaning if an athlete strikes or threatens an official or makes racial slurs or attempts to inflict bodily harm on another player, the player will be suspended from competition for six weeks. In addition, the school will be fined a minimum of $250 for each gross ejection after the first warning is issued to the school by the FHSAA.

A regular ejection, such as throwing a punch at another player during a game, will draw a one-week suspension from competition and cost a school a minimum of $100. The fines are schoolwide, meaning that if a gross ejection occurred to a football player, the next ejection would draw the fine regardless of the sport.

The new legislation is drawing mixed reviews from coaches and administrators who question whether the fines serve as a deterrent to players fighting in games. s AFM Top 5 Power Rankings
(records through Oct. 14)

1. De La Salle (Concord, Calif.)
Record: 6-0, Head Coach: Bob Ladouceur

The Spartans' national-record winning streak was up to 106 at press time and seemingly nowhere near an end. DLS vanquished Southern Cal rival Mater Dei (Santa Ana) for the third straight year.

2. Jenks (Okla.)
Record: 7-0, Head Coach: Allen Trimble

The Trojans once again fought an epic battle with rival Tulsa Union, winning 41-37 before a crowd of 31,000 at Skelly Stadium on Sept. 14. The two teams will likely meet again in the 6A state title game.

3. St. Ignatius (Cleveland, Ohio) Record: 8-0, Head Coach: Chuck Kyle

The Wildcats have been borderline dominant this season, with their only real close test coming from Massillon Washington - a 36-21 come-from-behind win. St. Ignatius is bidding for its ninth Division I state title in the last 12 years.

4. Cathedral Prep (Erie, Pa.)
Record 7-0, Head Coach: Mike Mischler

The Ramblers blew through their early schedule, averaging over 47 points per game while allowing less than six points. Cathedral is favored to end Central Bucks West's 50-plus-game winning streak and stranglehold on the Class AAAA state championship.

5. West Monroe (La.)
Record: 7-0, Head Coach: Don Shows

The Rebels have beaten highly ranked teams from three states - including a 36-8 win over defending Texas 5A/II champ Midland Lee. West Monroe is favored to win its fifth 5A state title in the past eight seasons.
