Recruiting 2001: A Look Ahead at Next Year\'s Blue Chippers

National signing day was only a couple of months ago, but it's never too soon to begin identifying and evaluating the prospects who will top every coach's wish list come next year. In this issue, we look at the top recruits on defense from the LB and secondary positions for the Class of 2001:

MLB-TE Joe DiPre
6-4 240 4.8
Cathedral Prep (Erie, Pa.)

A very tough, intense and physical player with good instincts; had a big game in last year's AAAA state championship game.

LB Alex Hall
6-1 220 4.7
Carroll (Corpus Christi, Texas)

A great hitter who reeks havoc sideline to sideline; had 68 solo tackles, five sacks and seven tackles for loss last year.

LB Brent Grover
6-4 235 4.7
Highlands (Fort Thomas, Ky.)

A true scholar-athlete who is a livewire on the field; led back-to-back state championship team in tackles as a sophomore and junior.

LB Doug Justice
6-4 220 4.7
Spruce Creek (Port Orange, Fla.)

A tremendous competitor and great hitter; had 170 tackles, with 11 for losses, and forced four fumbles last season.

LB-TE Matt McKinney
6-4 235 4.7
Refugio (Texas)

Comes from a football background - his dad, David, is Refugio's DC, and his brother Will plays at SMU; throws the shot over 60 feet and the discus 190 feet.

MLB-TE Joe DiPre

LB Lamarcus Rowell

His nickname is "The 'Bama Basher," and his coach, Spence McCracken, predicts he'll be playing on Sundays one day; had 127 total tackles in '99.

LB Chris Rudiger

La Mirada (Calif.)

A tremendous student (4.2 GPA) and a rock-solid linebacker; has excellent lateral pursuit.

FS Quentin Burrell
6-1 185 4.43
SW DeKalb (Decatur, Ga.)

A very intelligent ball-hawk who had nine interceptions and three sacks last season; has great bloodlines - his great grandfather is Eddie Robinson (Grambling).

S Jerome Carter
6-1 205 4.6
Columbia (Lake City, Fla.)

A Ronnie Lott clone who registered 76 solo tackles, 43 assists and three INTs during his junior season.

FS-QB Quan Crosby
5-10 180 4.2
Mart (Texas)

An outstanding athlete with great speed (21.5 in the 200m); had seven INTs last season and is also a great baseball prospect.

S-QB Andrew Harris
6-4 215 4.55
Northeast (St. Petersburg, Fla.)

A two-way talent who earned second team all-state honors at safety as a junior.

CB-WR Dominic Robinson
6-1 190 4.5
Diamond Bar (Calif.)

Has great cover skills and is also a dangerous receiver; averaged 19 yards per catch for a section-championship team last season.

DB Ernest Shazor
6-4 185
M.L. King (Detroit, Mich.)

A big-time playmaker who averaged eight solo tackles a game last season to go along with five interceptions.

CB-RB Jazzmen Williams

Sutherland (Pittsford, N.Y.)

Injured most of his junior year, but rushed for 380 yards and four TDs in 2.5 games; excellent at bump and run as a corner.

PK Adam Bowland

Oak Hill (W. Va.)

A great team leader who starred at Notre Dame's kicking academy last year; also a great student and an option QB and strong safety.
