High School NotesJamie DeMoney,by: HighwiredSports.com © More from this issue Late-season top performances Quarterback Mike Pfisterer of North County (Glen Burnie) became the all-time passing leader in Maryland on Nov. 3. Pfisterer threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns in a 39-26 loss to Annapolis, and finished his career with 6,351 yards and a state-record-tying 67 touchdowns. Hawaiian powerhouse St. Louis (Honolulu) exploded for 77 first-half points in an 84-0 rout of Damien on Oct. 28. The Crusaders scored 42 in the first quarter alone, which tied a team record. At press time, St. Louis was on track to win its 15th consecutive state championship. Connellsville running back Marcus Furman set a new Pennsylvania state record by rushing for 455 yards on 28 carries in a 38-26 victory over Hempfield on Oct. 28. Furman scored on touchdown runs of 81, 89, 34, 63 and 28 yards. With over 5,000 yards for his career, he is among the top 10 rushers in WPIAL history. Running back Chris Lomasney of Chippewa Valley (Mount Clemens) established a new single-season rushing record in Michigan, with 2,890 yards on 372 carries. The record-breaker came during a 35-14 loss on Nov. 17 to Birmingham Brother Rice in the Division II state semifinals. Mount Carmel (Pa.) became the fifth school to win 700 games on Nov. 11 with a 42-7 win against Troy in the Class AA district finals. The Red Tornadoes are the first Pennsylvania school to reach the milestone. Colorado passer fifth ever to surpass 10,000 yards The passing career of all-time Colorado record-holder Justin Holland got a little more history making when he surpassed the 10,000-yard mark for his career during Bear Creek of Lakewood's 48-12 Class 5A state quarterfinal win over Arapahoe on Nov. 18. Holland, who has verbally committed to play at Colorado State, is just the fifth prep quarterback to ever eclipse 10,000 career yards, the most recent being current University of Florida freshman Brock Berlin (Evangel Christian, La.). The all-time high school passing leader is J.R. House of Nitro (W. Va.), who threw for 14,457 yards from 1995-98. House signed a football letter of intent to play at the University of Georgia, but instead chose to sign a baseball contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is currently playing in the minor leagues. De La Salle-St. Louis matchup still on hold Off-and-on speculation throughout this season of a potential meeting between perennial top-10 powers De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) and St. Louis of Hawaii was off again as the season drew to a close. Discussions of a possible meeting this fall between the two schools broke off over the summer, but then rekindled last month when radio and Internet outlets reported that both St. Louis head coach Cal Lee and DLS athletic director Terry Eidson said a game could take place as early as Thanksgiving weekend. Both sides then said that scheduling the game was not feasible this year, mainly because both schools were playing in state playoffs at the same time. "It's a dead issue for this year," Lee told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. "We'll try to put something together for the future, probably 2002." De La Salle is a two-time national champion, according to the National Prep Poll, and had won 111 straight games through Nov. 19. St. Louis had won 14 straight sanctioned and mythical state championships entering the season and is an annual staple in the national rankings. Jamie DeMoney, a former editor at American Football Monthly, writes for HighwiredSports.com. AFM Top 5 Power Rankings 1. De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) Will the Spartans ever lose? Probably, but not this season. DLS is heavily favored to collect its ninth consecutive section title and finish the season with 113 straight wins. 2. Jenks (Okla.) The Trojans are seeking an unprecedented fifth straight 6A state title. Running back Kejuan Jones has made the home fans happy by committing to the University of Oklahoma. 3. Cathedral Prep (Erie, Pa.) The Ramblers had yet to play a close game at press time, as they rolled to a likely rematch with four-time Class AAAA defending champ Central Bucks West in the state final. 4. West Monroe (La.) The year's version of the Rebels vaunted defense may be the best it's ever been. A Class 5A championship this season would be their fifth in the last eight seasons. 5. Poly (Long Beach, Calif.) The Jackrabbits are as talented as ever this season - and that's saying something. Remember the name Hershel Dennis. He's likely to be one of the top RB recruits in the nation next season. |
