New Season, New Coaches

As the 2002 football season is about to start, the attention given to coaches is only going to increase – especially new coaches.

In some cases the double-whammy for new coaches is not only the “win now” mentality, but to reach the level of expectations set by their predecessors. Fans, alumni, media, administration, parents and just about every person in a coffee shop will be closely examining every decision, word and action of their new coach. In our article, “The Problem with Legends?” we look at how coaches like Ray Perkins, Earle Bruce, Fred Akers, Gary Moeller and many others handled similar situations in following the legendary coaches that came before them.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, our cover story, “Path To Victory,” profiles Sonny Lubick and the turnaround he and his staff engineered at Colorado State. Since taking the job in 1993, Coach Lubick has guided his team to six bowl games in nine seasons, won or shared the conference championship five times in nine years and has been honored with a reserved seat at a local restaurant among many other coaching accomplishments.

You’ll also notice the addition of several very informative editorial content being added to many of our articles. In the past three months we added the “Nation’s Best” program, which showcases clinic articles from football’s statistical leaders in all categories. We’ve also been providing more information about the coaches writing these clinic articles as well as more detailed statistics about the football programs themselves. Further, in selected articles, we provide our “3 Others” program which identifies additional articles of similar content that should aid in your search for more coaching information.

If you have yet to do so, I invite you to visit our new Web site, www.AmericanFootballMonthly.com. As a subscriber, you’ll be able to read hundreds of articles designed specifically for football coaches and access back issues of American Football Monthly. Sign up for our free e-mail newsletter and we’ll e-mail you the latest in the coaching community twice each month.

With major moves like the creation of our new Web site (the largest collection of coaching information on the Internet) and the Nation’s Best program, we hope your reading experience becomes more informative and will assist you in your goal of becoming a better coach and teacher of young men. I welcome your comments and appreciate any feedback you can provide.

Respectfully,
