While the business of searching for the right coach is an age-old process – at every level – the actual process has changed over time. While the financial implications of making the wrong choice weren’t as crucial as they are today, finding the right fit – the right coach for the right high school or college – is a difficult and often times frustrating process.

The pressure to find the right person seems, today, to be at an all-time high. With more exposure and visibility given to just about every conference and moregames televised – at all divisions – than ever before, making thewrong choice can have disastrous effects. Many recruits ask a prospective coachthe amount of exposure on television his school has and the answer often timeshelps determine the recruit’s decision.

This issue of American Football Monthly takes a look at just that: the processof the search for the right coach. There are firms that specialize in the processand evaluate both the needs of the particular school and whether or not a candidateis the right fit. Many of the searches, then, are out-sourced so, in this ageof specialization, the experienced head-hunter can find the right chemistry betweenschool and coach.

Speed is also of the essence: often a school does not have much time after thedecision is made to replace the present coach and then announce his replacement.Every day is unproductive from a recruiting standpoint until the new coach isannounced. Football fans across America are speculating if some of last year’schoices to revitalize stagnant programs were the right choices for their respectiveprograms. Time will tell.

In subsequent issues we will examine the process of how the search for the righthead coach effects assistant coaches and what they can do to prepare for thefallout that occurs when their head coach is fired. The hiring and firing ofcoaches is an on-going process; we plan to both go through the process but alsooffer guidance and suggestions on how to ease transitions.

As always, if there is ever anything that we can do for you, please do not hesitateto contact us at 561-355-5068. Thank you.
