One of the many benefits of being Managing Editor of American Football Monthly is building relationships. As in most professions, relationships begin by phone call or, more recently, email. They’re then strengthened with more communication and maybe a personal meeting.

Over the last three years, I’ve had the good fortune to grow relationships with many coaches at the high school, college, and professional level. Some I’ve met but many others have become an on-going phone/email relationship.

Now, with the advent of AFM University clinics in 2008, I have the opportunity to meet many coaches face-to-face...it should be a great opportunity for you, as well. I can’t wait for AFM’s four clinics in 2008. They are in St. Paul (February 8-9); Indianapolis (February 15-16); Dearborn (February 22-23); and Kansas City (February 29-March l). AFM University is designed to provide you with the most comprehensive and highest quality educational program in the industry. It's a two-day learning seminar with classroom lectures and labs presented and taught by the top experts from high school, college, and professional levels. The program is designed for football coaches from all levels – from junior high to the NFL. In addition to the classroom lectures and break-out sessions, the clinics will include an extension of American Football Monthly with ‘Point-Counterpoint’ sessions; an offensive-defensive debate in which coaches clash on a specific topic.

It’s an opportunity for me to either finally meet coaches I’ve spoken to over the years or continue to grow relationships. The sessions at each of the four locations includes an assortment of outstanding coaches, many of which will talk about the latest innovative offenses and defenses in the country. Among them:

• Bryon Hamilton: Head Coach at Foothill High School in Palo Cedro (CA). Foothill has, arguably, the most innovative offense in the country – The Shotgun Zone Fly. In 2006, this offense resulted in nearly 4,000 rushing yards.

• Dale Weiner: Head Coach at Catholic High School, Baton Rouge, LA. Weiner's 'Spin' offense resulted in an overall 58-10 record since it was introduced in the 2001 Louisiana state playoffs.

• Glenn Caruso: Head Coach at Macalester College. Caruso's introduction of the Pass Action Run produced one of the most prolific offenses in the country. Macalester averaged 8.3 yards every time the play was called in 2006.

• Steve Rampy: Head Coach at Blue Valley High School (KS). His installation of the 'Pistol' offense led to a 2006 state title and increased the team's offensive production by over 1,000 yards.

• Todd Quick: Defensive Coordinator at Lufkin High School (TX). A proponent of the 4-2-5 defense, Quick employs both the Okie Blitz package and multiple stunts in his arsenal.

• Steve Tutsie: Head Coach at State Champion Warren Central in Indianapolis: A defensive specialist who believes in the even defensive front, Tutsie's Warren Central team went 15-0 in 2006. It was their fourth straight Indiana State title.

Additionally, Ron Zook of Illinois, Mike Leach of Texas Tech, Bobby April of the Buffalo Bills, Terry Shea of the Miami Dolphins, Chuck Martin of Grand Valley State, and Steve Specht of St. Xavier High School (Cincinnati) will be featured speakers. Each clinic clearly represents an opportunity to not only build relationships but learn from experts at all levels.
