Confuse the Quarterback, Part II – Disguise your blitzes to stop the run and still defend the pass.

I never liked allowing a good zone read option quarterback to come to the line of scrimmage knowing how our secondary coverage was going to be aligned. I also thought it was important to give the offensive line and the blocking back a variety of pressure calls that were accompanied by some type of movement at the snap of the ball. Our goal was to use these calls to stop the run without significantly compromising the ability to defend the pass.
The following calls are some of the different ways we would try to accomplish this out of both a reduction front and a straight 50 front. Note that there are a number of coverage options on each call. Through scouting, a quarterback will become familiar with the specific pressure components of the call but he will not know which of the various coverage options will be presented.
