Building Champions to Win Championshipsby: Rex LardnerEditor American Football Monthly © More from this issue We recently surveyed coaches on a variety of topics, one of which was their interest in having more information about leadership. An astounding 80% said they would like us to present more information on this topic that is so vital to individual and team success. With this issue of American Football Monthly, we are introducing a new monthly Leadership report – Building Champions to Win Championships. AFM has assembled a team of leadership experts to explore, define and communicate key aspects of this topic. In addition to the regular magazine reports, we are creating and will publish the Building Champions Newsletter, a new series of leadership DVDs and will be establishing the AFM Leadership Community where football coaches can learn, exchange and explore this topic with fellow coaches. What is Leadership? Why is Leadership critical to every football program’s success? A recent visitor to our office, a many times State Champion winning coach, suggested he considered it the most important factor between winning championships and not. Everybody knows the Xs and Os, some better than others, but the ones who embrace, create and develop leadership will most often be the winners. We will explore the Pillars of Leadership, defined as: Self-Awareness, Trust, Cognitive Understanding, Self-Direction, Emotional Understanding, Vision and much more. Our monthly reports will discuss Motivation, Creating Your Culture, Staff Leadership, What You Can Control and leadership outside your program. How can you and your program maximize your credibility with your administration, parents, the community, boosters, current and future players. Additionally, we will look at how successful coaches have addressed leadership and applied their ideas and strategies. One veteran Chicago area coach explained how he visits the homes of upcoming seniors every February and March to discuss team and individual goals with his primary objective to start to develop senior leadership. We hope you will participate with us, join our Leadership Community and give us your comments and feedback as we pursue this critical element in Building Champions and Winning Championships. Please send your comments to leadership@afmmedia.com. With this issue, Coach Grabowski begins his ‘Coaching HD’ columns. With the incredible growth of technology and how it has applications to football, Keith will provide the latest information on ways to assist today’s coach. His column on page 50 details three different companies that have taken virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to another level. The idea is training the brain to function in a number of different situations where the dangers of injury are reduced. Research on these simulations have shown that the results are improved performance on the field. The overall concept is to train the mental processes so the body can react correctly in game situations. We also examine how technology can give you an extra edge in “Technology Steps Up”, which reviews how tech companies have reacted to the 2013 rule change allowing in-game, on-field use of video and computer analysis of plays in the high school game. It’s a whole new ball game that, with the right tools, can give you a significant advantage in your play calling. |
