By Bill Mountjoy, Retired Coach After stretching exercises, have your quarterbacks execute the pulley drills. There are high pulls, medium pulls, and low pulls. There should be 15 repetitions at each level and the number of reps should be increased by five pulls each week. Here is the complete execution of the drill: · Place the throwing hand in a loop with the hand open and the palm turned in, simulating a grip on the football. · Drape the other end of tubing over your throwing shoulder. · Put the non-throwing hand behind your back, reaching as high as you can and then pull firm on the tubing, taking out the slack. · Point your elbow (for low pulls) straight forward, bringing your throwing hand down close to your shoulder. Apply tension to tubing with hand behind back. · Hold wrist firm and completely extend the arm in a throwing motion with full follow through. Pull rapidly and firmly but not with a jerky motion. · Bring back slowly to starting position. · For medium pulls, raise the throwing arm 45 degrees and repeat the exercise. · For high pulls, raise the throwing elbow as high as possible (90 degrees) and repeat the exercise. · Tension can be increased by pulling down on the tubing with hand behind back. · These exercises should be done before and after a workout. They also can be done when the quarterback has free time away from the field.
