AFQ IS DEAD!

Four years ago, in a one room office, in the middle of Kansas, our magazine American Football Quarterly was born. As with most ideas, initially it was a "labor of love" for the few involved in the project. But the love affair that was shared by just a few grew to an overwhelming outpouring of devotion throughout the country. As soon as coaches heard about what quickly became known as AFQ, they had to have it. Thousands sent in their subscription cards and thousands more called the office to order the magazine they saw on a friend or colleague's desk.

AFQ was the first magazine to speak directly to the coach. Talking to them in their language and concerning topics that they wanted and needed to know about. Whether it was the heartbreaking story of Coach Wayne McDuffie, who committed suicide when he found himself fired and without a job for the first time in his career; the lessons of triumph and tragedy of former Florida Coach Charlie Pell, whose bouts with depression almost cost him his life; the effects on a family when a coach is fired; is there too much God in the locker room; or what happens to a team when tragedy strikes. Each of these stories, along with the hundreds of articles on Xs and Os, strength training, psychology and more, have been the foundation of our magazine. We have brought our readers the latest information on all of the products and services that can help their programs; everything from helmets, reconditioning techniques, to ankle braces, nutritional supplements and strength training equipment.

In the beginning, we had a very simple game plan: to be the best source of information for the football coaching professional. I am absolutely certain that we have achieved our goal; not because I think this is the case, but because hundreds of coaches picked up the phone and called to tell me. But, there has always been one big complaint; coaches from the NFL to a middle school OL coach from Missouri, have all asked the same thing: "Why don't you come out every month?" "We want more information on the latest happenings, trends and news within the profession. . . ," you have told us.

We have heard what you have been saying and I am proud to announce that AFQ is dead! Starting with this issue, American Football Quarterly is now American Football Monthly. We will be coming to you every month. Each issue will be the same quality that you have come to expect from AFQ. But, now we will bring you up-to-date news and notes from the industry, along with such topics as salary surveys, hiring trends and much more that will make you anxiously await the first of the month and the arrival of each issue.

AFQ was the friendly grandfather that came by every so often. You were glad to see him, but when he was gone, you really didn't miss him until you saw him again. AFM will be like that girlfriend that you are madly in love with; you'll savor every second with it, miss it terribly when it's absent, and count the minutes until you see it again.

I look forward to continuing to give you the very best magazine ever created for the football coach. Only now you'll see it twelve times a year.

Sincerely yours,

Barry Terranova
