From 1975-85, there was not a more colorful personality in the NFL than former Oilers' and Saints' coach O.A. "Bum" Phillips. As Houston's coach from 1975-80 and the New Orleans Saints' coach from 1981-85, Phillips' homespun wit, sense of humor and Texas drawl made him a non-stop quote machine. What was sometimes forgotten was the fact he was a veteran football man who was mentored by Bear Bryant and spent more than 30 years in the game. Also lost in the shuffle is that "Bum" is the father of current Buffalo Bills' coach Wade Phillips.

"Coaches are very important. Hell, you can get the players off the back of a Wheaties box."

"There are two types of coaches. Them that have just been fired and them that are going to be fired."

"If I have to tell a guy "do it" because I'm the head coach, then there's a little bit of doubt whether I am or not."

"Two kinds of football players ain't worth a damn. The only one that never does what he's told and the other that never does anything except what he's told."

"He can take his'n and beat your'n or he can take your'n and beat his'n" - referring to former Dolphins coach Don Shula.

"My idea of discipline is not making guys do something, it's getting them to do it. There's a difference between bitching and coaching."

"There are a multitude of offensive sets but you can't run all of them. You must narrow them down to what you can do best and what fits your people best. The quickest way to learn that is coaching in high school."

"Show me an emotional coach on the sidelines and I'll show you a team that will mirror everything he does."

"Everyone likes to play and no one likes to practice."

"I teach them to get along with their fellow man - the other players. If you don't teach that in coaching, then you're not coaching."

"Everyone will forget you when you leave the game and all you will have left are the things it has taught you - to sacrifice, to work hard."
