What more could you possibly ask of a developmental league? Since 1991, the NFL has been the only American sports league to create, fund, and operate a separate league anywhere in the world. The league was founded primarily to develop American football in Europe, but more importantly for those of us in the States, to give invaluable playing time to talent who otherwise might be unable to ever get on the field. Originally, the league featured both American and European teams. After a two year hiatus, the league returned in 1995 as a six team all European venture. During the 2000 season, over eighty former NFL-Europe stars played significant roles on NFL rosters. While NFL-Europe may be a lost leader in the financial column, no one can argue against the importance of these players and coaches to their allocated NFL teams.
