It’s November. Your season is winding down, if not already over. It’s time to start thinking ahead to the off-season and formulating a game plan that will put you and your program on solid footing as you look forward to next season.
But, for those of you fortunate enough to be in the playoff hunt, there is still time to address on-the-field issues. In particular, your defense. How your defense reacts to the challenge of stopping the high-powered offenses you will surely face during your championship run will mean the difference between keeping your title hopes alive and going home disappointed.
Defensive coordinators that we spoke to agreed that secondary play is an area where late-season adjustments can dramatically pay off. Whether it’s deciding to press receivers to disrupt their timing, introducing new drills that can keep defensive backs sharp or simply emphasizing proper open-field tackling techniques, it’s never too late to improve your pass defense. In the words of defensive assistant and 10-year NFL veteran Lee Calland of Tennessee State, “We have to get better or we will start to decline. Nothing stays the same for champions.” With that in mind, we’ve compiled a collection of easy-to-implement quick fixes for defensive backs that we hope will propel your secondary to stellar play and help your team reach championship status.
It is articles such as these – contributions from coaches all over the country and programs big and small – that are the foundation of AFM. Football coaches are part of a great fraternity that freely shares ideas. AFM is proud of our role as the nation’s leading compiler and distributor of ideas for coaches. As always, we encourage your submissions either for AFM or our sister publication Gridiron Strategies.
Also this month, we’re introducing a new feature, From the Coach’s Bookshelf. Every issue, we’ll publish an excerpt from a notable book written by or about a notable coaching figure. First up is former NFL Head Coach Brian Billick with a segment from his recently-released More Than A Game: The Glorious Present and Uncertain Future of the NFL. We trust you’ll enjoy Coach Billick’s anecdotes and thoughts about being an NFL head coach.
Next time you’re online, be sure to visit AmericanFootballMonthly.com and check out our new interactive blog In the Red Zone with Rex Lardner. AFM’s guru of everything football gives you his take on what’s happening in the game, little known facts and figures and interesting tidbits from the past. You’ll have a chance to participate, too, with your opinions and even enter Rex’s football trivia contest where you can win prizes from AFM. Be sure to check it out, beginning this month.

Give a leader the recognition he deserves

For the second year in a row, Hammer Strength is recognizing high school football student athletes who exhibit outstanding leadership, effort and character. The Hammer Strength High School Football Player of the Year Award honors a player who is not defined by size, speed or statistics but rather the drive, determination and commitment it takes to become a top competitor.
Criteria for the award include a strong work ethic, outstanding leadership, consistency of effort and high academic standing. One winner, judged from the nationwide pool of nominees, will receive a handsome trophy, a profile in an upcoming issue of AFM, and a piece of Hammer Strength equipment for his school. You can find our more about the award program at AmericanFootballMonthly.com or HammerStrength.com/HammerPOY and nominate a player from this year’s team.
We believe that every high school team in America has a player who deserves to be nominated for this prestigious award. Please take a few minutes to submit your nominee and recognize a player for his hard work, determination and leadership.
