Early Season Top Performers

Cline Engle from Burns (Lawndale, N.C.) kicked a 61-yard field goal on Sept. 1 to establish a new state record. Unfortunately, the boot was the Bulldogs only points in a 48-3 loss to Shelby.

Noah Ingram from Ruleville (Miss.) broke his own single-game state rushing record with a 506-yard outburst against Gentry (Indianola) on Sept. 9. Ingrams Tigers won the game 74-71.

Running back Frank Gore from Coral Gables (Fla.) is off to a fast start after rushing for a Miami-Dade County record 377 yards in the Cavs Week-One 48-0 win versus South Miami. He followed that up with 260 yards in a 56-9 win against Coral Park. Defending 6A state champs Naperville Central (Ill.), a rankings bubble team, won its first three games by a combined score of 125-0.

James Savage of Upper Dauphin Area (Elizabethville, Pa.) had 402 yards rushing in a 37-23 win over Millersburg on Sept. 9. Savage. Savage got 305 of the yards on touchdown runs of 75, 50, 99 and 81 yards.

Evangels streak comes to an end

One of the nation's longest and most storied winning streaks came to an end Sept. 2 in the Superdome. Evangel Christian (Shreveport, La.), which had won 60 consecutive games on the field (minus three forfeits), lost to Archbishop Shaw (New Orleans), 22-19. The Eagles then dropped No. 2 in-a-row the next week, 35-20, to Moss Point (Miss.).

Evangel, last years No. 1 team in the final National Prep Poll, graduated a handful of Division I players from last year, including Florida freshman QB Brock Berlin.

All-American quarterbacks season ends early

It was a short senior season for Brodie Croyle from Westbrook Christian (Rainbow City, Ala.) after the record-setting quarterback tore the ACL in his left knee in the opening game. The injury came midway through a 39-14 loss to Glencoe.

Croyle was entering his final year as perhaps the nations top passing prospect and was his states all-time passing leader already with 9,374 yards and 105 touchdowns. He recently narrowed his college choices to Alabama, Florida State, Miami (Fla.) and Oklahoma, and planned to graduate in December to participate in spring drills.

Study: head injuries three times more likely after first one is suffered

According to a study at the University of North Carolina, football players who suffer concussions are three times more likely than other players to suffer a second concussion in the same season.

The study, published in the September-October issue of the American Journal of Sports Medicine, suggests that the brain is more susceptible to injury when it has not had enough time to recover from a first injury. Researchers say the finding is important because concussions can lead to permanent brain damage, vision impairment or even death if not managed properly.

The findings are part of a three-year research project in which a random sample of 242 certified athletic trainers across the United States who worked with high school and college football teams were surveyed.

Earlier, the researchers found that five of the 17 high school football deaths last season were caused by on-field head injuries. AFM Top 5 Power Rankings
